BLOCK SEVEN

"Peyton Randolph House"

Let us introduce you to the residence of Founding Father,

Peyton Randolph and his wife Elizabeth. The Randolphs were one

of the wealthiest and most powerful families in Virginia.

Although

Peyton and Elizabeth did not have any children of their own,

they helped raise several of Elizabeth's younger siblings

after her parents passed away.

The Randolph Manor, in addition to the family, was home to 27 slaves.

During the Civil War the House was used

as a hospital to both sides.

The Peyton Randolph House is rumored to be the

most haunted building in Williamsburg.

BLOCK EIGHT

"Manor House Wreath"

Evergreens decorated with fruits and berries symbolize

Christmas in Colonial Williamsburg. During the 1700's,

fresh fruit was precious during winter, so the elaborate

wreaths were most often found on Manor Houses.

A Virginia Manor House would generally have been

the main residence of a prosperous planter or wealthy merchant.
